Season 1 · Episode 6 · Science

A New Materials Box.

At the next science session, Saeon headed for the bench. An empty observation container stood against the back wall. Clear plastic, easy to see inside.

The dark navy stone base and gray bench were unchanged. But Saeon stopped at the materials box. Different objects waited in its three open compartments.

“The materials box changed.”

Sodam came alongside. Dure set the honey-colored notebook on the shelf. Teacher Gwak joined them at the bench.

The broad hall stayed open behind them. Nothing had changed along the route Saeon had taken. They were still in the Experiment Area on the lowest floor.

Science · Magnet Bench

A gray bar magnet was fixed to the short arm at the back. Turning the handle brought its end close to the compartments. For now, it was turned away from the box.

The little result light at the front was off. Saeon tapped the teal box's corner. Time to find what would stick.

“Find what sticks. And tell me why.”

The teacher gestured toward the box. Saeon glanced across the three compartments and looked up.

“This one's easy.”

On the left lay a dark gray iron paper clip. Dull, unlike the silver clip from before. It had no paint or outer coating.

A pearly white paper card lay in the middle. A long streak of light shone on its smooth surface. The sky-blue plastic cup on the right wasn't shiny.

The card was made only of paper. No metal foil or metallic ink. The cup was all plastic, with no metal decorations or hidden metal inside.

Materials Box

Iron paper clip · Plastic cup · Paper card

Sodam moved a fingertip along the outside of the compartments.

“What's different this time?”

Saeon's eyes stopped in the middle. The card was much brighter than the clip. Saeon's finger went to the card first, too.

“The card's shiny. That should stick.”

Last time, the silver cup hadn't stuck. But that had been a plastic cup. This time, a different object was shining.

Sodam adjusted the glasses.

“The last card didn't stick. What's different about this one?”

“This one's shiny.”

Saeon traced the light on the card with a finger. The last card had been plain cream. This one had a patch that looked ready to stick.

Saeon's hand went toward the magnet handle. Dure raised an empty hand to chest height. Saeon stopped just short of the handle.

“Not yet. Too soon to decide.”

Saeon kept the hand open and looked at the middle compartment. The shine was definitely there. But the magnet was still at the back.

Had Saeon seen it shine? Or seen it stick?

A dull amber knot appeared around the card. Two cream-colored gaps showed between rounded strands. Simple eye-like gaps, just like the others at the bench.

The knot stayed within the space around the card. It didn't reach toward the children. The card beneath the light didn't move.

“The card's tangled.”

Sodam pointed outside the left compartment.

“Here, too.”

A thin band wrapped around the iron clip. Its color was close to the clip's, making it hard to spot. Saeon finally looked away from the middle.

The teacher pointed to the wrapped objects.

“A device made from a mistaken idea. Explain, and it comes undone.”

Now Saeon could see both the knot and the band. One Tangle around two objects. There wasn't another layer hidden inside, as there had been in the last math session.

Surprise Quest

Shiny Tangle

What in this materials box sticks to a magnet?

Reward: Skill Boost

Saeon drew back from the handle. Paper card. Iron clip. Even after seeing the materials' names, Saeon had picked the shiny thing.

“I'll check them one at a time. Same magnet.”

Saeon started with the right-hand compartment, where there was no knot. A slow turn of the handle brought the bare magnet near the sky-blue cup.

The cup stayed on the bottom. Its side didn't follow as the magnet moved away. Saeon stopped the handle.

“Cup stays put.”

Sodam's fingertip waited above the edge.

“Clip next.”

Just then, a shallow recess opened at the front of the base. Saeon let go and bent closer, keeping both hands back. Dure pointed outside the opening.

“The recess opened. The light went higher.”

Inside was the three-step stair piece from the last science session. A line of light climbed its rounded corners. This time, it reached a little farther up.

The small hollow at the top was still empty. The light reached it, but no piece filled it. No letters or patterns appeared, either.

Saeon watched the tip of the light, hands outside. At the math table, a small stone lay beneath the lower gap. Here, the upper hollow remained empty.

How could they connect? Saeon straightened without taking out the piece. The recess slowly closed.

The sky-blue cup hadn't moved. Strands remained on the middle card and the left-hand clip. The result light was dark.

Saeon turned the bare magnet toward the left compartment. The dull clip lifted off the bottom and stuck to the magnet, leaving its compartment empty.

Even when Saeon drew the handle back a little, the clip stayed attached. Saeon studied the gray surface that had seemed so unimportant. No shine needed. The result was right there.

“The iron clip sticks even when it isn't shiny.”

The thin band around the clip loosened. The knot around the card stayed. Saeon almost let go after finding the clip, then stopped.

The card Saeon had picked first was still waiting. Finding one thing that stuck hadn't checked that claim. Saeon looked at the middle compartment.

“We need to check the card, too.”

The teacher watched the device nearby. With the arm stopped, Saeon removed the clip, returned it to the left compartment, and checked the magnet's empty end.

No testing the card with a clip attached. Saeon swung the same bare magnet toward the middle and stopped it close to the card.

The pearly card didn't lift. When the magnet moved away, its corner stayed on the bottom. Only the light on its smooth surface remained.

Saeon let go of the handle and opened the other hand at chest height. This time, Saeon stopped before Dure raised a hand.

“Card stays put, too.”

Saeon checked all three compartments. The sky-blue cup hadn't stuck. The iron clip had. The paper card hadn't.

“We tried all three with the same magnet.”

At first, the card's shine had seemed enough to finish. Now Saeon pictured each object beside the magnet. Every result could be checked for gaps.

“What stuck. What didn't. Say all of that, and we're done.”

Dure looked at Saeon's open hand, then up.

“That's how you know when to finish.”

Saeon held the hand still until Dure finished speaking. It didn't mean trying more things. It meant stating all three results without leaving one out.

“Only the iron clip sticks. The cup and card don't.”

The strands around the card spread apart. The last one still held on. The result light at the front stayed off.

Saeon turned the magnet left again. The iron clip stuck to its end. Beside the empty left compartment, the card and cup stayed in theirs.

All three results in one view. Same magnet, one object at a time, every result stated. Saeon let go of the arm.

Last time, Dure's hand had come this far. Today, Saeon brought an empty hand to the front and brushed a fingertip along the edge.

The result light in the middle stayed uncovered. Saeon's fingertips stopped at the far right, away from the light. The hand touched neither an object nor the knot.

The last strand came undone. The light left on the card and clip turned cream-colored. It faded from their surfaces and vanished.

The paper card and iron clip remained. The magnet didn't glow, either. Only then did the front result light come on for the first time.

Observation

Sticks: Iron paper clip

Does not stick: Plastic cup, paper card

Saeon looked up at the teacher.

“The material and the result. Not the shine.”

Saeon pointed to the middle compartment and went on.

“The shiny card didn't stick. The iron clip wasn't shiny, but it stuck.”

The teacher waited for Saeon to finish, then nodded.

“You checked all the way through.”

Quest Clear

Shiny Tangle · Unraveled

Observation: Only the iron paper clip sticks

Skill Boost: “Stick or Not?” — Objects Attracted to a Magnet

Saeon drew back from the edge. That hand had picked only the card at first. Now it had marked the finish, once every result was covered.

Dure fetched the notebook from the shelf, brushed the end of the page, and closed it.

“Record finished.”

They stepped away from the lit bench. The iron clip stayed on the magnet. The paper card and sky-blue cup remained in their compartments.

At the end of the wide hall, the stairway door stood open. Saeon walked there with both friends. The familiar notice waited beside it.

Next Move-Up Challenge

End of Term · One Gate in Each Area

Clear a gate to move upstairs

Condition: All three explain in their own words

Broad stairs and a railing rose beyond the door. They were still on the lowest floor. Saeon stopped and looked up.

The upper hollow had been empty again. But the light had climbed a little higher. Saeon held on to that small difference and looked toward the part of the tower hidden from view.
