Season 1 · Episode 8 · Science

Change Just One Thing.

At the next science session, Saeon went to the bench. Dure put the notebook on the shelf and opened a fresh page. Sodam and Teacher Gwak stood nearby.

A long container lay on the gray bench. It was made of hard, clear plastic. This device had replaced the materials box and the magnet arm.

“Two magnets.”

Two gray bar magnets lay inside. The little result light at the front was dark. The wide hallway behind them stayed open.

Floor 1 · Experiment Area

Science · Two Magnets

Each magnet rested in a shallow track on a round holder. The two long bars faced end to end. A gap the length of one magnet separated them.

The container was a safety cover, closed at both ends. No holes for reaching inside. Saeon studied the two round handles outside.

The left handle turned the left holder. The right handle turned and moved the right holder. Pushing it forward brought the magnets closer.

The holders rotated only when someone turned a handle. The magnets could slide a little along their tracks. They couldn't slip sideways or turn on their own.

The teacher gestured toward the container.

“Bring the facing ends close. Change one thing at a time.”

Saeon stood at the right handle.

“Two won't take long.”

Last time, they had checked a clip, a card, and a cup. They'd finished after saying what stuck and what didn't. Today, both objects were gray magnets.

Saeon tapped the bench's corner. Move one closer, and surely the ends would stick together. The handle was right there.

Sodam pointed to the middle from outside the container.

“This is how big the gap is.”

A small white circle marked each end of each bar. All four circles were blank. Color couldn't tell the ends apart.

A notice beside the container showed the ends' names. Small pointers marked the two facing ends.

Magnet Ends

Two ends: N pole · S pole

Facing ends: N · N

Saeon looked between the two ends in the middle. N on the left. N on the right. The outer ends were both S.

“They're both magnets. Any ends should stick.”

Sodam adjusted the glasses.

“We don't know till we try.”

“I bet they'll stick.”

Saeon reached over the right handle. Leave the left one alone. Push the right one into the gap.

Dure raised an empty hand to chest height.

“Not yet. Decide what you're changing.”

Saeon's hand stopped just before taking hold. The handle was still at its starting point. The gap between the magnets hadn't changed.

Moving closer. Turning the ends. If they did both at once, what would the result tell them?

Saeon drew back and looked at the handles. They could turn them or push them. So far, Saeon had only thought about making the magnets stick.

Amber light gathered at the left magnet's outer end. Dull strands formed a small round knot, with two cream-colored gaps like eyes.

The white marker stayed uncovered. The knot was smaller than the magnet and stayed inside the container. It didn't reach toward the children.

“A magnet's tangled.”

“The left one.”

Sodam's finger stopped outside the container. The teacher held an open palm toward the knot.

“A device made from a mistaken idea. Tell me your reasons.”

Surprise Quest

Little Any-End Tangle

What happens when you bring N and N close together?

Reward: New Skill

Saeon checked the two N ends again. The facing ends hadn't changed. Now they needed to see what happened when those ends moved closer.

“Same ends. I'll only make the gap smaller.”

Sodam pointed beside the right handle without covering or grabbing Saeon's hand.

“Slowly. Watch both ends.”

Saeon took the handle and pushed a little at a time. The right holder moved left. Saeon watched the shrinking gap.

As the ends came close, the magnets moved. The left bar slid left along its track. The right bar slid right along its own.

The holders came closer, but the bars moved apart. A gap remained between their ends. They didn't touch.

Saeon stopped pushing.

“They're pushing away.”

Saeon had been watching for the place where they would meet. Instead, there was a gap. Moving the handle that way hadn't made the bars stick together.

Sodam watched the middle, too.

“N and N pushed apart. Next, S and S.”

Just then, a shallow recess opened at the front of the base. Saeon let go of the handle. Dure brought the fingertips together outside the opening.

“The light's reached here.”

Inside was the three-step stair piece from the last science session. Light traveled up its rounded corners, a little higher than before.

The upper hollow was still empty. Even with the light climbing, no stone filled it. No letters or patterns marked the piece.

Saeon followed the light with both hands outside. At the math table, the light had reached the top hollow. A little stone had lain separately underneath that piece.

They had never taken either piece out. Here, only the science piece's empty upper hollow was in view. Saeon remembered its edge.

The recess slowly closed. Saeon straightened. The result light was still off.

Checking N against N wasn't the end yet. Saeon pulled the right handle back to its starting point. The teacher stayed close, watching the device.

They checked that both magnets were back at the start of their tracks. Once again, a magnet-length gap lay between them. Sodam pointed to it.

“Same starting gap. Push the same amount, too.”

Dure took the left handle. Saeon took the right. Each turned a handle halfway around.

The round holders rotated, switching the bars' ends. The S ends that had faced outward now faced the middle. The display changed to S and S.

The knot on the left magnet turned with it. Now it wrapped around the end facing the middle. The white marker and the gap between the ends remained visible.

Saeon checked that the right holder was at its starting point. Dure released the left handle. Sodam pointed to the middle from outside.

“The facing ends are what we changed.”

Again, Saeon pushed only the right handle. Same starting point, same amount of movement. Saeon's eyes followed the ends inside rather than the handle.

The left bar slid left in its track. The right bar slid right. Once again, their ends didn't touch.

Sodam's fingertip stopped in front of the remaining gap.

“S poles push apart, too.”

Sodam pointed to the two names on the notice.

“N with N. S with S. Matching ends both times.”

Saeon remembered the first pair of N ends. The names had changed, but the movement was the same. They had checked with the same gap and the same push.

Sodam lowered a hand from the glasses. A thin cream-colored pin of light reached from the fingertip to the knot. The hand stayed outside; only the light stilled the strands.

The outer strands loosened. The last one remained on the left magnet. The result light was still off.

Saeon returned the handle to the start and let go. The bars rested with their original gap between them. Nobody held either handle now.

“I said any ends would stick.”

Saeon looked between the two facing ends.

“Matching poles push apart. N and N. S and S, too.”

The ends of a magnet were called poles. Saeon looked beyond the matching gray bars to their ends. To explain the result, they had to say which poles faced each other.

Dure pointed to two lines in the notebook.

“We checked N with N and S with S.”

Dure brought an empty hand to the front of the bench.

“Same gap. Same push. Both cases checked. That's the finish.”

A fingertip brushed along the front edge without hiding the result light. The hand stopped at the right-hand end.

The last strand came undone. Its light turned cream-colored, faded, and vanished. Both gray magnets stayed inside the container.

Only then did the result light come on. It shone at the bench's edge. The magnets themselves didn't glow.

Observation

N · N: Push apart

S · S: Push apart

Saeon looked at the teacher.

“We changed the ends and kept the distance the same.”

Sodam pointed to the middle gap and added,

“The starting gap and how far we pushed were the same.”

The teacher waited until both had finished, then nodded.

“You changed just one thing.”

Quest Clear

Little Any-End Tangle · Unraveled

Observation: Like poles repel

New Skill: “Pole Reader” — Like and Unlike Poles

Saeon took a step back from the handles. The hand that had wanted to push farther was empty now. Dure brushed the end of the page and closed the notebook.

Sodam turned toward the open hall.

“All checked. Let's go.”

Saeon walked with both friends to the stairway door. They were still on the lowest floor.

Next Move-Up Challenge

End of Term · One Gate in Each Area

Clear a gate to move upstairs

Condition: All three explain in their own words

Wide stairs and a railing rose beyond the door. They didn't climb yet. Saeon pictured the empty upper hollow and the light that had climbed a little higher.

What was at the top?
