Saeon turned away from the stairway door. Teacher Gwak pointed down the side hall. Their first day wasn't over yet.
“Saeon, Sodam, Dure. To the experiment bench.”
They followed the hallway from the Puzzle Gallery, staying on the same floor. The path was wide and level. The way back stayed open behind them.
This time, a long, low experiment bench waited instead of trays.
A navy display appeared before Saeon, with the same little stair-shaped corner.
Floor 1 · Experiment Area
Science · Magnet Experiment
Saeon thought of the cores left on the math table. Three trays, four cores each.
They hadn't climbed a single stair to get here. Moaddeul Academy had more than one place to explore on the same floor.
“Your first experiment on Floor 1. I'll watch closely.”
The voice came from upstairs. Ryu Moeun stood straight behind the railing, holding a round observation board with a teal rim.
Its clear middle was made of shatterproof plastic.
Saeon raised a hand a little. The promise to Ichan came back. Another chance to find a method of their own.
Saeon turned from the upper floor to the bench.
It stood on a dark navy stone base. The gray plastic edges were rounded. A small result light sat at the front.
It was dark.
A gray bar magnet was fixed to a short arm at the back. Turning a handle moved the arm sideways. The magnet stayed attached, safely held in the device.
Three white dishes sat in a row. A silver iron paper clip lay on the left. A paper card lay in the middle.
A yellow plastic cup stood on the right.
The clip was made of iron. The card was only paper. The cup had no metal decorations and no metal hidden inside.
Light reflected off its smooth plastic surface. Both the clip and the cup shone.
The teacher stood beside the bench.
“Keep the magnet the same. Change only the object.”
Saeon looked at the magnet, turned toward the back. It hadn't gone near any dish yet. They would bring the same magnet close to one object at a time.
“Me first, please.”
Sodam pointed to the three dishes in turn.
“Which one first?”
Saeon tapped the bench's corner. A tiny light shone on the silver clip. A similar streak ran down the yellow cup.
The paper card stayed dull as the light moved.
Prediction
Iron paper clip · Plastic cup · Paper card
A prediction was a guess about what would happen before trying it. Saeon pointed from the clip to the cup. Those two clearly had something in common.
“Shiny things stick. The clip and the cup.”
Saeon skipped the card and reached straight for the handle. Check those two, and this would be over in no time.
Sodam adjusted the glasses.
“Hang on. Why those two?”
“They're both shiny.”
Dure raised a hand to chest height.
“Not yet. Check first.”
Saeon's fingers stopped just above the handle, ready to grab it. The hand had arrived first. The checking hadn't even started.
Then dull amber strands appeared around the cup. They made a small, round knot. Two cream-colored gaps showed between the strands.
The gaps looked like simple eyes. There was no mouth, no arms or legs.
The knot stayed wrapped around the cup. It didn't reach toward Saeon. Saeon drew the waiting hand back.
“Did my idea do that?”
The teacher pointed to the knot beside the cup.
“It's a Tangle. A device made from a mistaken idea. Explain your thinking, and it comes undone.”
The yellow cup was still there beneath the little knot. Saeon's words seemed to have arrived ahead of the objects.
Words that said they would stick before anyone had tried.
A display appeared beside the bench.
Surprise Quest
Little Shiny Tangle
Which objects stick when the same magnet comes close?
Reward: New Skill
Sodam pointed to the magnet at the back.
“Same magnet. One at a time.”
Saeon looked from the handle to the three dishes. The cup's shine was still there under the knot. Pointing at a shiny surface wasn't the same as testing it with a magnet.
Would those two really do the same thing?
This time, Saeon took the handle slowly. The magnet's end moved toward the left dish. The iron clip lifted off the dish and stuck to it.
Saeon turned the handle back a little. The clip moved with the magnet. The left dish was empty.
It was definitely the clip that had stuck.
“The clip sticks.”
Sodam removed it while Teacher Gwak watched the device, then put it back in the left dish.
“Clip off. Now the card.”
Saeon checked the magnet's bare end. No moving on with the clip still attached. The same bare magnet swung toward the middle dish.
Saeon stopped it near the paper card. The card didn't lift. Even when the magnet moved away, the card's corner stayed flat on the dish.
A shallow recess opened at the front of the base. Saeon let go of the handle and bent down. Inside lay a little stair piece.
Three steps rose from bottom to top. A real little object, with steps of different heights. Light flowed down along its rounded corners.
There were no letters or patterns.
“Only the top spot's empty.”
Dure pointed from outside the recess. A tiny hollow sat in the top step. Saeon kept both hands outside and looked.
The light at the math table had come back down, too. Here, there was an empty hollow as well. Could the two pieces be connected?
Saeon followed the matching direction of the light without taking the piece out.
When the light passed beneath it, the recess closed. Saeon straightened. The right-hand dish came into view.
The cup still needed checking.
The result light was dark. Finding a clue hadn't finished the experiment.
Saeon turned the bare magnet to the right, brought it near the cup, and stopped. The yellow cup didn't move.
Its side was still shiny.
Saeon moved the magnet away a little, then close again. The cup stayed in the same place. Saeon looked back at the clip on the left.
Two shiny objects. Different results.
“They're both shiny, but only the iron one stuck.”
Saeon looked at the two objects that had seemed so alike. Their surfaces caught the light in a similar way. But the clip was iron. The cup was plastic.
“I only checked the shine. I should've checked what they're made of.”
The cup's outer strand loosened. More yellow plastic showed through the dull amber knot. One last strand still held on.
The result light stayed off.
Saeon looked up at the teacher.
“Only the clip stuck. The card and the cup didn't.”
The teacher nodded without adding an answer. Dure rested a hand at the front of the bench.
“We checked all three. What sticks and what doesn't.”
Dure turned the magnet back to the left dish. The iron clip stuck to its end. The left dish was empty; the card and cup stayed in theirs.
Saeon looked across the three places. One magnet, one object at a time. Now they had a result for every object.
Of the two Saeon had guessed, only one had stuck.
Dure's empty hand brushed along the bench's front edge and stopped at the end.
“That's enough to finish.”
The last strand came loose. It turned cream-colored and vanished from the cup. The eye-like gaps vanished with it.
The cup remained a yellow plastic cup.
Only then did the result light come on for the first time. The magnet didn't glow. The little light shone steadily at the edge of the bench.
Observation
Sticks: Iron paper clip
Does not stick: Plastic cup, paper card
Saeon looked where the prediction display had been. The first claim and the actual result were different. Now Saeon could explain that difference.
Beside “I think it'll stick,” there could be “Here's what I saw.”
Quest Clear
Little Shiny Tangle · Unraveled
Observation: Only the iron paper clip sticks
New Skill: “Stick or Not?” — Objects Attracted to a Magnet
Saeon looked at the shiny cup once more. Same cup as before. But now Saeon could describe it separately from the clip. What mattered was what it did near the magnet, not how it shone.
“What's the next experiment?”
“Here, next time. Prediction first.”
The teacher gestured toward the bench. Saeon stepped away from the handle. Next time, after making a guess, there would still be room to check it.
Dure closed the notebook.
“Today's experiment is done.”
They returned to the wide hall. Behind them, the clip stayed on the magnet. The card and cup were still in place.
The result light shone above the closed recess.
The notice by the stairway door was the same one they had seen in the math area.

End of Term · One Gate in Each Area
Clear a gate to move upstairs
Condition: All three explain in their own words
Saeon was still on the bottom floor. Through the open doorway, broad stairs rose beside a railing.
Not yet. Saeon stayed where they were and looked up toward the part that couldn't be seen.
The empty hollow in the stair piece came to mind. Why had the light flowed down in both places? Saeon held on to that thought and gazed up the tower.
What was at the top?
